Creative Insight Psychotherapy
Welcome! I’m Michelle Coomes, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 15 years of experience helping individuals, couples, families, and groups navigate life’s challenges and transitions. My therapeutic approach is rooted in a family systems perspective, which means I view relationships and personal development within the context of the systems we’re a part of—whether that’s your family, community, or other support networks. I believe that understanding the bigger picture of these dynamics can foster healing, connection, and lasting change.
Throughout my years of practice, clients often tell me that they appreciate my ability to both challenge them and offer compassion. I take pride in creating a safe, nonjudgmental space for clients to explore difficult emotions, experiences, and patterns. I am deeply committed to a strength-based approach—believing that every person has the capacity to overcome obstacles and thrive, especially with the right support.
In therapy, we will work together to uncover insights about yourself and how you show up in relationships, while developing healthier communication skills. Whether you’re dealing with a specific life transition, facing relationship challenges, or just seeking to understand yourself more deeply, I am here to support you in navigating these areas with clarity and purpose.
I also recognize that talk therapy isn’t always enough for everyone, which is why I incorporate art therapy and other creative techniques when appropriate. As an expressive art therapist, I’ve seen firsthand how creativity can unlock new perspectives and facilitate deep emotional processing. Whether you’re using art, movement, or other forms of self-expression, these tools can offer breakthroughs that traditional talk therapy may not always access.
One of my greatest passions is leading process groups, where clients can come together with others facing similar challenges or past trauma. These groups foster healing, understanding, and personal growth by allowing participants to share their experiences and gain new insights from one another. It’s powerful to witness the transformations that occur when people are able to come together and create a supportive environment for mutual growth.
Whether you’re seeking individual therapy, couples counseling, family support, or a group experience, I am here to guide you with a compassionate, strength-based approach to help you move toward a more fulfilling and connected life.
I look forward to walking with you on this journey of growth and healing.
Accreditation
I hold a license as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and received my education in Marriage and Family Therapy from Appalachian State University in 2009. I also received a post-graduate certificate in Expressive Art Therapy as well. I attend national conferences regularly pertaining to my field, specifically the American Academy of Psychotherapists where I have been awarded as a young scholar earlier in my career (2013) and have also presented workshops there as well. I regularly seek out trainings locally and nationally that will enhance how I work with patients in my practice. Additionally I’m attending trainings, conferences, reading and networking to have a continual deepening and understanding of the work I offer. I also benefit from going to therapy myself regularly to maintain my own mental health. I believe that keeping up with therapeutic skills is important but also my own mental health is crucial.
